Used or Reconditioned — Which Golf Engine to Buy?

Used Golf engines

For Golf models, EA888 and EA211 petrol engines are widely available in used condition; EA189 diesel units (2008–2015) are common but require careful checking for Dieselgate-related software updates. Used units offer a cost-effective solution for lower-mileage replacements. Most used Golf engines come from UK breakers with a 30–90 day warranty. We always recommend a thorough inspection and service before installation.

Reconditioned Golf engines

Reconditioned Golf engines provide a higher level of reliability, especially for high-mileage examples. Each unit is disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt to factory tolerances with new bearings, rings, and gaskets. This is a strong choice for EA888 and VR6 engines where parts availability remains strong. Reconditioned units include a standard GMC warranty and are ready to fit. Note: This steer uses PENDING-status demand data for EA288, EA211, and VR6 — re-verify before treating as final.

Golf Engines Through the Generations

Golf

The Mk4 Golf (2000–2004) used the EA111 petrol family (1.4, 1.6) and the EA189 TDI PD diesel family (1.9 TDI in 90–150 PS outputs). The range-topping R32 introduced the 3.2 VR6 engine with 241 PS and 4Motion. The Mk5 (2003–2009) introduced the EA113-based 2.0 TFSI for the GTI (200–230 PS), alongside EA111 petrols and EA189 diesels. The Mk6 (2008–2013) saw the first EA211 1.2 TSI petrols and the first EA888 2.0 TSI for the GTI (200–210 PS). The Mk7 (2012–2020) moved to the MQB platform, introducing the EA211 family (1.0 TSI, 1.2 TSI, 1.4 TSI, 1.5 TSI ACT) and EA288 diesels. The Mk8 (2019–present) introduced EA211 Evo 1.5 eTSI mild-hybrids and EA888 Evo4 for the GTI (245–265 PS) and R (320–333 PS).

Check the V5C registration document for the engine code field (four letters). Alternatively, use a free online reg checker or look for the engine code sticker on the timing cover or in the service book. If the registration falls near a model-year transition, cross-check the chassis code with the tables above.
