Used or Reconditioned — Which Polo Engine to Buy?
Used Polo engines
Used Polo engines are a cost-effective choice for high-volume EA211 and EA111 families. The EA211 is the most common petrol engine across Mk5 and Mk6 Polos, and used availability is strong due to high production volumes. EA111 units from Mk4 and early Mk5 are also widely available, though timing chain replacement history should be checked on pre-2014 examples. Used engines typically cost less than reconditioned alternatives and are suitable for budget-conscious replacements.
Reconditioned Polo engines
Reconditioned Polo engines offer greater reliability with new wear parts fitted throughout — pistons, rings, bearings, and seals are replaced to factory specifications. For Mk5 and Mk6 1.0 TSI and 1.2 TSI engines, reconditioned is often recommended given the timing chain and belt service requirements that can be neglected on used units. 1.4 TSI BlueGT units with cylinder deactivation benefit from full rebuilds to restore compression and oil control. Recon units carry a higher upfront cost but reduce the risk of secondary failure after installation.
Polo Engines Through the Generations

Polo 2002-present
The fourth-generation Polo introduced the PQ24 platform, shared with SEAT Ibiza and Škoda Fabia. The 1.4-litre petrol alone carried seven different engine codes across the production window. The May 2005 facelift brought updated engine offerings including the 1.8T GTI. The fifth-generation Polo introduced TSI and DSG combinations for the first time. The 2014 facelift replaced the 1.2 TSI EA111 with the 1.2 TSI EA211 — a key transition from timing chain to timing belt. The sixth-generation Polo moved to the MQB A0 platform. Petrol engines are exclusively EA211-family 1.0 MPI and 1.0 TSI three-cylinder units. Diesel offerings continued with 1.6 TDI four-cylinder common-rail across the range.
Polo Engine Buying FAQs
The Volkswagen Polo has used a wide range of petrol and diesel engines across its generations. Petrol engines include 1.0 MPI, 1.0 TSI, 1.2 MPI, 1.2 TSI (EA111 and EA211), 1.4 MPI, 1.4 TSI, 1.6 MPI, and 1.8T GTI. Diesel engines include 1.2 TDI, 1.4 TDI (PD and CR), 1.6 TDI, 1.9 SDI and 1.9 TDI PD. Engine codes vary by year and output — always check the V5C or engine bay sticker.
Check your V5C registration document — the engine number and engine code are listed in the vehicle details section. Alternatively, look for the engine code sticker in the spare wheel well or on the timing belt cover. For Mk4 Polos (2002–2009), common codes include AUA/BBY (1.4 75 PS), AUB/BBZ (1.4 100 PS), and ATD/AXR (1.9 TDI). For Mk5 (2009–2017), look for CBZA/CBZB/CBZC (1.2 TSI) or CAYB/CAYC (1.6 TDI). Online reg checkers can also confirm the factory engine specification.
Used Polo engines are widely available and cost-effective, particularly for the high-volume EA111 and EA211 families. Reconditioned units offer greater reliability with new wear parts, but cost more. For Mk4 1.4 TDI and 1.9 TDI engines, used availability is good due to high production volumes. For Mk5/Mk6 1.0 TSI and 1.2 TSI engines, reconditioned is often recommended given the timing chain/belt service requirements.
All GMC engines are supplied with a standard warranty covering mechanical failure. Direct-purchase fixed pricing applies — no quotes, no diagnostic assessment required. Delivery is to UK addresses only. Specific warranty terms and delivery timeframes are shown on each engine listing page.
