The Volkswagen Tiguan has been offered with three Volkswagen Group EA-series engine families across its three generations: EA888, EA288, and EA211. Mk1 used EA888 2.0 TSI and EA189/EA288 2.0 TDI diesels plus EA211 1.4 TSI. Mk2 continued with EA888, EA288, and EA211, adding a 1.4 eHybrid PHEV. Mk3 uses EA888 evo4, EA288evo, and EA211evo2.

The engine code is printed on the vehicle's V5C registration document (logbook) in the engine number field — the first three characters typically denote the engine code (e.g., DFGA, CZPA, DADA). The engine code can also be found on a sticker in the spare wheel well, inside the service schedule booklet, or on a label on the cambelt cover.

For the Tiguan, used engines are widely available for all three generations at significantly lower cost than reconditioned units — typically £1,200–£4,500 depending on generation and variant. Reconditioned engines offer greater reliability assurance but command a premium (often £3,000–£6,000+). For older Mk1 Tiguans with high mileage, a used engine from a low-mileage donor is often the most cost-effective solution. For Mk2/Mk3 vehicles still within their economic lifespan, reconditioned may be preferable for longevity.
