Used or Reconditioned — Which Passat Engine to Buy?
Used Passat engines
EA189 (2.0 TDI) and EA888 (2.0 TSI) families are widely available and cost‑effective for older B6/B7 models. A used engine from a low‑mileage donor can cut costs significantly, especially for the high‑volume 2.0 TDI and TSI units. We recommend checking the service history and mileage of any used unit before purchase. For VR6 and BiTDI variants, used examples are rarer and may require more searching.
Reconditioned Passat engines
EA288 and EA211 units are recommended for newer B8 models where used stock is thinner and the cost differential is smaller. Reconditioned engines offer peace of mind with fresh bearings, piston rings, and gaskets, often backed by a longer warranty. They are especially worthwhile for the 1.4 TSI and 2.0 TDI CR families found in the latest Passats. The VR6 and BiTDI remain rare in either condition, so a reconditioned example may be the only reliable option.

Passat 1997-2024
The B5 and B5.5 Passats (1997–2005) established the model’s diesel reputation with the 1.9 TDI PD family (AHU/AFN/AVB/AVF/AWX), while the 1.8 Turbo (AEB) and distinctive 2.3 V5 (AGZ) brought petrol choice; the 2.8 V6 (ACK/ALG) and 2.5 V6 TDI offered six‑cylinder refinement. The B6 (2005–2010) introduced the full VAG modular suite: EA111 2.0 FSI (BLR/BVY), EA189 2.0 TDI (BMP/BKP then CBAB/CBAC), and the first EA888 2.0 TSI (CAWB), with the R36’s 3.6 VR6 (BWS) delivering 300 PS. The B7 (2010–2014) continued with EA189 diesels (CFFB/CFGC) and EA211 1.4 TSI (CAXA/CTHD) petrols alongside the 1.8 TSI (CDAA). Finally, the MQB‑platform B8 (2014–2024) shifted to EA288 diesels (CRLB/CRLD/DBGA/DBGB/CUAA) and EA211 petrols (CZCA/CZDA/CZEA), later adding the 1.5 TSI (DADA/DPCA) and EA888 evo4 2.0 TSI (DKZA/DNNA). The GTE PHEV (CUKC/DGEB) combined the 1.4 TSI with an electric motor, while the BiTDI (CUAA) offered 240 PS from the 2.0 TDI.
