Used or Reconditioned — Which MINI Convertible Engine to Buy?

Used MINI Convertible engines

The Tritec and Prince engines are now older and reconditioned units are less common; used units are widely available. The B‑series engines (B38, B48, B37, B47) are newer and available in both used and reconditioned forms. Used engines typically cost less than reconditioned units but may have higher mileage and require more careful inspection before purchase.

Reconditioned MINI Convertible engines

The Tritec and Prince engines are now older and reconditioned units are less common; used units are widely available. The B‑series engines (B38, B48, B37, B47) are newer and available in both used and reconditioned forms. Reconditioned units offer greater reliability but command a premium. Demand is highest for the B48 and B47 (High [PENDING] in BRF).

MINI Convertible Engines Through the Generations

Convertible

Convertible 2004-present

The first‑generation MINI Convertible launched in 2004, based on the R50/R53 Hatch. It used the Chrysler‑sourced Tritec 1.6 petrol engine in naturally‑aspirated (115 PS) and supercharged (170 PS) forms. The convertible body added structural reinforcements and a fully automatic soft top. The R52 was replaced in 2009. The second‑generation MINI Convertible (R57) switched to BMW‑developed Prince petrol engines (1.6 NA and turbo) and, for the first time, offered diesel variants using the BMW N47 family (1.6 and 2.0). A facelift in 2014 brought updated Prince engines (N16/N18) with improved efficiency and emissions. The Cooper D and Cooper SD diesels were popular UK choices. The current F57 Convertible moved to the BMW B‑series modular engine family, with 1.5 three‑cylinder (B38) and 2.0 four‑cylinder (B48) petrols, and 1.5 (B37) and 2.0 (B47) diesels. The JCW trim receives a high‑output B48 producing 231 PS. This generation also introduced a more refined chassis and improved infotainment.

MINI Convertible Engine Buying FAQs

The Convertible has used three engine families across its generations: Tritec (R52, 2004‑2008), Prince (R57 petrols, 2009‑2015), N47 diesel (R57 diesel, 2009‑2015), and BMW B‑series (F57, 2016‑present). The B‑series engines are shared with BMW and MINI.

Check the V5C registration document's engine code field (D.2) – e.g. "N18" for a 2014 Cooper S, or "B48" for a current Cooper S. Alternatively, use the DVLA vehicle enquiry service or a registration‑lookup tool. The engine code is also stamped on the engine block.
