E8x 2004–2013
launched on N45/N43 petrol fours and M47/N47 diesels, with the N52 six-cylinder topping the early range; the 2007 facelift replaced N45 with N43 and M47 with N47, while N54/N55 twin-turbo sixes powered the 135i and the limited-run 1M.
F20/F21 2011–2019
introduced N13/N20 turbo-four petrols and continued N47 diesel at launch, before the 2015 facelift brought BMW's B-series modular family — B38 and B37 three-cylinders, B48/B47 four-cylinders, and B58 for the M140i.
F40 2019–2024) and F70 (2024–Present
consolidated entirely onto the B-series family, with 48V mild-hybrid assistance standard from F70 onward.

Use the registration checker on this page — it confirms your exact generation and factory-fitted engine code from DVLA data. This model has had several mid-generation engine transitions (116i alone used N45, N43, N13, and B38), so this is worth checking carefully.
High-supply generations (E8x N43/N46, F20/F21 N13/N20) favour used. Current B-series engines have thinner used supply given their relative currency, so reconditioned is more commonly selected.
Reconditioned engines carry a 12-month, unlimited-mileage warranty on internal mechanical components. UK mainland delivery by kerbside pallet, typically 2–4 working days, with 14-day uninstalled returns.
