Used or Reconditioned — Which Astra Engine to Buy?
Used Astra engines
For GM-era petrols (Ecotec Family 0, A14NET), used engines are widely available and generally robust. The 1.4 turbo has a known timing chain stretch issue, making reconditioned units preferable if the chain has not been replaced recently. For post-2018 Stellantis engines (PureTech, BlueHDi), used units are the default — these engines are newer and generally reliable. Used engines offer the most cost-effective solution for most Astra owners, particularly for the high-volume 1.3 CDTI and 1.6/2.0 CDTI diesel variants where UK parc is substantial.

For the 1.9 CDTI diesel, reconditioned units are recommended due to age-related injector and DPF wear. The A14NET 1.4 turbo — a known timing chain stretch engine — is a prime candidate for reconditioned units that have had the chain and tensioner replaced as part of the rebuild. The Astra H launched with GM's Ecotec Family 0 petrol range (1.4, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 Turbo) and a diverse diesel lineup including the Fiat-Multijet 1.3 CDTI, the GM-Isuzu 1.6/1.7/2.0 CDTI family, and the Family Z 1.9 CDTI. The 1.9 CDTI (120–150PS) was the volume diesel in the UK used market. The Astra J introduced the A14NET 1.4 turbo petrol as a core engine, replacing the older Ecotec NA petrols for many buyers. Diesel offerings continued with the 1.3 CDTI, 1.6/1.7 CDTI, and a 2.0 CDTI (160PS) and 2.0 BiTurbo CDTI (195PS).
