For 2014–2018 models with BMW-sourced diesels, look for 1WW (1.6) or 2WW (2.0). For 2009–2018 petrol Valvematic models, look for 1ZR-FAE (1.6) or 2ZR-FAE (1.8). A: This depends on your budget and the age of your vehicle. For newer AR10 models (2009–2018), used engines with low mileage are often the most cost-effective option. For the 1AD-FTV diesel (2006–2014), high-mileage examples may benefit from a reconditioned unit with new injectors and turbo components. The BMW-sourced N47 diesels (2014–2018) have known timing chain concerns — a reconditioned unit with updated chain components is recommended for higher-mileage examples. Petrol engines are generally robust but may need attention to ignition and cooling components as they age.
