Used or Reconditioned — Which Verso Engine to Buy?

Used Verso engines

Used engines are a cost-effective option for older Verso models, particularly XP20 and early AR10 generations. For newer AR10 models (2009–2018), low-mileage used units often provide the best value. All used engines are compression-tested and photographed before dispatch.

Reconditioned Verso engines

Reconditioned units are recommended for high-mileage diesel engines, particularly the 1AD-FTV (2006–2014) which may benefit from new injectors and turbo components. For the BMW-sourced N47 diesels (2014–2018), a reconditioned unit with updated timing chain components is strongly advised. Petrol engines are generally robust but may need attention to ignition and cooling components as they age.

Verso Engines Through the Generations

Verso

Verso 2001-2018

The first-generation Verso (XP20, 2001–2004) launched as the Corolla Verso with a straightforward engine range: 1.6 3ZZ-FE and 1.8 1ZZ-FE VVT-i petrols, plus the 2.0 1CD-FTV D-4D diesel — Toyota's first D-4D in a UK MPV. The second-generation (AR10, 2004–2009) carried over the petrol engines and introduced the 1AD-FTV diesel in 2006, replacing the 1CD-FTV. The facelifted AR10 (2009–2018) brought new Valvematic petrols: 1.6 1ZR-FAE and 1.8 2ZR-FAE, with the diesel range continuing as 1AD-FTV until 2014, when BMW-sourced N47-based units (1WW, 2WW) took over. Production ceased in 2018 with no direct successor.

Verso Engine Buying FAQs

A

A: The Verso was offered with several engine families across its production run. Petrol engines included the 1.6 3ZZ-FE VVT-i (2001–2009), 1.8 1ZZ-FE VVT-i (2001–2009), 1.6 1ZR-FAE Valvematic (2009–2018), and 1.8 2ZR-FAE Valvematic (2009–2018). Diesel engines included the 2.0 D-4D units: 1CD-FTV (2001–2006), 1AD-FTV (2006–2014), and from 2014, BMW-sourced N47-based units (1WW and 2WW).

A

A: Check your V5C registration document — the engine code is listed in Section 4 (Vehicle details). For 2001–2009 models, common codes include 3ZZ-FE (1.6 petrol), 1ZZ-FE (1.8 petrol), and 1CD-FTV (2.0 diesel, 2001–2006). For 2006–2014 models, look for 1AD-FTV (2.0 diesel). For 2014–2018 models with BMW-sourced diesels, look for 1WW (1.6) or 2WW (2.0). For 2009–2018 petrol Valvematic models, look for 1ZR-FAE (1.6) or 2ZR-FAE (1.8). You can also use an online reg-checker service (e.g., the DVLA vehicle enquiry service).

A

A: This depends on your budget and the age of your vehicle. For newer AR10 models (2009–2018), used engines with low mileage are often the most cost-effective option. For the 1AD-FTV diesel (2006–2014), high-mileage examples may benefit from a reconditioned unit with new injectors and turbo components. The BMW-sourced N47 diesels (2014–2018) have known timing chain concerns — a reconditioned unit with updated chain components is recommended for higher-mileage examples. Petrol engines are generally robust but may need attention to ignition and cooling components as they age.

A

A: All GMC engines come with a standard warranty covering mechanical failure. Delivery is to a UK mainland address of your choice (commercial address preferred; residential delivery may be possible subject to vehicle access). Used engines are photographed and compression-tested before dispatch; reconditioned engines are fully rebuilt with new gaskets, seals, timing components, and bearings. Detailed warranty terms are available on each listing page.
