Used or Reconditioned — Which Auris Engine to Buy?
Used Auris engines
The Auris Hybrid (2ZR-FXE) shares its engine with the Prius and Lexus CT — a large used market exists. Used engines are cost-effective for older Mk1 models where vehicle value may not justify reconditioning costs. The 1.33 (1NR-FE) and 1.6 (1ZR-FE/FAE) petrols are widely available used across the Toyota range (Yaris, Corolla, Avensis).
Reconditioned Auris engines
Reconditioned engines offer peace of mind with warranty for Mk2 models still in daily family use. The 2.2 D-4D (2AD-FHV) is a high-performance diesel; check for DPF and EGR issues at higher mileages. Reconditioned units are stripped, inspected, and rebuilt to factory tolerances with new seals, gaskets, and wear parts.
Auris Engines Through the Generations

Auris 2007-2018
The Auris launched in 2007 as Toyota's new C-segment hatchback, replacing the Corolla in Europe. Built at Toyota's Burnaston plant in Derbyshire, the Mk1 launched with 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol units and 1.4, 2.0 and 2.2-litre D-4D diesels. In 2009, the 1.33 Dual VVT-i (1NR-FE) replaced the 1.4 VVT-i, and a refreshed styling was introduced in 2010. The Auris Hybrid, Toyota's second hybrid model after the Prius, launched in 2010 using the same 1.8-litre petrol-electric running gear as the third-generation Prius. The second-generation Auris launched in 2012 with a choice of 1.33 or 1.6-litre petrol engines, a 1.4-litre diesel, and the 1.8-litre Hybrid. The Touring Sports estate joined the range in 2013. A major 2015 facelift brought new powertrains: the 1.2-litre turbo petrol (8NR-FTS) replaced the 1.6 Valvematic, and the 1.6-litre D-4D diesel (WWE185) replaced the 2.0 D-4D. Production ended in 2018 and the Auris nameplate was retired, replaced by the Corolla.
