Used or Reconditioned — Which Vivaro Engine to Buy?
Used Vivaro engines
For Vivaro, the 2.0 dCi (M9R) and 1.6 dCi (R9M) are common; reconditioned units are recommended for high‑mileage vans. Current BlueHDi engines are newer, used parts may be limited. If you are looking for a budget‑friendly drop‑in, a used engine can be a cost‑effective option provided it comes from a known, tested donor. Always verify the engine code matches your vehicle before purchasing.
Reconditioned Vivaro engines
For Vivaro, the 2.0 dCi (M9R) and 1.6 dCi (R9M) are common; reconditioned units are recommended for high‑mileage vans. Current BlueHDi engines are newer, used parts may be limited. A fully reconditioned engine offers peace of mind with new bearings, rings, seals, and a thorough rebuild. For commercial‑use Vivaros that see heavy daily mileage, reconditioning is often the smarter long‑term investment.
Vivaro Engines Through the Generations

Vivaro 2001-present
The Vauxhall Vivaro, a badge‑engineered twin of the Renault Trafic, has always been a diesel‑only proposition in the UK. The first‑generation Mk2 (X83, 2001–2014) launched with the 1.9 dCi (F9Q) in 80 and 100PS outputs, alongside the 2.5 dCi (G9U) producing 135PS. A 2006 facelift dropped the 1.9 in favour of the 2.0 dCi (M9R) in 90, 115, and 120PS tunes, while the 2.5 was upgraded to 145PS. The Mk3 (X82, 2014–2019) saw the arrival of PSA‑sourced 1.6 dCi (R9M) engines in 90–145PS, while the 2.0 dCi continued in 120–170PS forms. The current Mk3 facelift (2019–present) adopts the 2.0‑litre BlueHDi family (DV5/M9T) with 110–170PS and AdBlue technology, though these newer units are not yet formally listed in the Vauxhall brand registry for this model.
