Used or Reconditioned — Which Yaris Engine to Buy?
Used Yaris engines
For high-volume engines (1KR-FE, 1NR-FE, 1NZ-FXE), used units are widely available. The 1.0 and 1.33 petrols are common across the Yaris range and can be sourced from breakers with reasonable mileage. Used hybrids are also available but check battery condition alongside engine health.
Reconditioned Yaris engines
For lower-volume or performance engines (2ZR-FE, G16E-GTS), reconditioned units may be the more reliable option. The 1.8 and GR Yaris engines are less common in the used market, so a rebuilt unit with new bearings, rings, and gaskets offers greater peace of mind for performance applications.
Yaris Engines Through the Generations

Yaris 1999-present
The first-generation Yaris (XP10, 1999-2005) launched with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder (1KR-FE) and later gained 1.3 (2NZ-FE) and 1.5 (1NZ-FE) petrols, plus a 1.4 D-4D diesel (1ND-TV) from 2002. The second generation (XP90, 2005-2011) continued the 1.0 (1KR-FE) and 1.3 (2NZ-FE, later 1NR-FE) petrols, joined by a 1.8 (2ZR-FE) in 2007, with the 1.4 D-4D remaining available. The third generation (XP130, 2011-2020) kept the 1.0 (1KR-FE) and 1.33 (1NR-FE), while the 1.5 Hybrid (1NZ-FXE) debuted in 2012 and the 1.4 D-4D was phased out; a limited-run 1.8 supercharged GRMN appeared in 2017. The fourth generation (XP210, 2020-present) offers a 1.0 (1KR-FE), a 1.5 Hybrid (M15A-FXE) in two power outputs, and the GR Yaris with a 1.6 turbo (G16E-GTS).
Yaris Engine Buying FAQs
The Toyota Yaris has used three core engine families across four generations: Valvematic 1.0/1.33 (1KR-FE, 1NR-FE), Hybrid/Valvematic 1.8-2.0 (1NZ-FXE, 2ZR-FE, M15A-FXE, M15A-FKS), and D-4D 1.4 (1ND-TV). Additionally, early 1.3 (2NZ-FE) and GR Yaris 1.6 turbo (G16E-GTS) engines exist but are not yet covered by the BRF. The engine fitted depends on the generation and trim level chosen.
Check the V5C logbook for the engine number — the first characters indicate the engine family (e.g., 1KR, 1NR, 1ND, 2ZR, M15A, G16E). Alternatively, use the registration number with an online parts catalogue or enter your reg on our site for instant fitment verification. For transition years (e.g., 2009), confirming the engine code is essential as two different engines may appear in the same model year.
For high-volume engines (1KR-FE, 1NR-FE, 1NZ-FXE), used units are widely available. For lower-volume or performance engines (2ZR-FE, G16E-GTS), reconditioned units may be the more reliable option. Consider your budget and how long you plan to keep the car when choosing between used and reconditioned.
