Used or Reconditioned — Which Land Cruiser Engine to Buy?

Used Land Cruiser engines

Land Cruiser engines are known for their durability. The 1KD-FTV and 1GD-FTV are widely available used due to high production volumes. For higher-mileage examples or where service history is uncertain, reconditioned units offer peace of mind. The 4.0 V6 (1GR-FE) is less common in the UK but shares parts with other Toyota models.

Land Cruiser 2002-present

The fifth-generation J120 Land Cruiser launched in January 2003 with a 3.0-litre D-4D diesel (1KD-FTV, 161 PS) and a 4.0-litre VVT-i V6 petrol (1GR-FE, 249 PS). Euro IV revisions in 2006 raised diesel output to 171 PS. The sixth-generation J150 initially continued with the 3.0 D-4D (1KD-FTV). In July 2015, this was replaced by the 2.8-litre D-4D (1GD-FTV, 174-175 PS). A 2020 update raised output to 201 PS. No petrol variant was offered in the UK. The seventh-generation all-new J250 launched in 2024 on the GA-F platform, powered by a re-engineered 2.8-litre turbodiesel (1GD-FTV, 201 PS) with an eight-speed automatic. A 48V mild-hybrid variant joins the range for 2026.

The UK-market Toyota Land Cruiser (J120/J150/J250) has used three main diesel engines: the 1KD-FTV 3.0 D-4D (2002–2015), the 1GD-FTV 2.8 D-4D (2015–present), and briefly the 1GR-FE 4.0 V6 petrol (2003–2009). The larger J200 Series uses the 1VD-FTV 4.5 V8 diesel.

Check the V5C logbook for the engine number – the first characters indicate the engine family (e.g., 1KD, 1GD, 1GR). Alternatively, use the registration number with an online parts catalogue. The model badging (e.g., "3.0 D-4D" or "2.8 D-4D") also identifies the engine.
