Used or Reconditioned — Which Paceman Engine to Buy?

Used Paceman engines

The Paceman's Prince and N47 engines are shared with the Countryman and other MINI/BMW models, so used units are available. Used engines offer a lower upfront cost and are sourced from vehicles that have been dismantled after accidents or mechanical failure elsewhere. Each used unit is inspected for compression and basic serviceability before listing.

Reconditioned Paceman engines

Given the Paceman's short production run and age (now 9–13 years old), reconditioned units may offer better reliability. Reconditioned engines are stripped, measured, and rebuilt with new bearings, piston rings, gaskets, and seals — often including a fresh timing chain and water pump. They come with a more comprehensive warranty than used units.

Paceman Engines Through the Generations

Paceman

Paceman 2013-2016

The MINI Paceman (R61) was produced for a single generation from 2013 to 2016, sharing its powertrain lineup with the R60 Countryman. The petrol range consisted of 1.6-litre Prince engines: a naturally aspirated N16 in the Cooper, and turbocharged N18 units in the Cooper S and John Cooper Works. Diesel options used N47 engines — a 1.6-litre in the Cooper D and a 2.0-litre in the Cooper SD. The Paceman was never updated with BMW's later B-series engines, which began appearing in the MINI range from 2013 onwards but never made it into this model before production ended. ALL4 four-wheel drive was optional on most variants. The Paceman was discontinued after 2016 with no direct successor.

Paceman Engine Buying FAQs

The MINI Paceman (R61, 2013–2016) uses 1.6-litre Prince petrol engines (N16 naturally aspirated in the Cooper; N18 turbocharged in the Cooper S and JCW) and N47 diesel engines (1.6 in the Cooper D, 2.0 in the Cooper SD). No B-series engines were ever fitted to the Paceman.

Check the V5C logbook for the engine number — the first characters indicate the engine family (N16, N18, or N47). Alternatively, use the registration number with an online parts catalogue, which will match the correct engine code to your vehicle's VIN. If your Paceman is from a transition year, always confirm with the V5C before ordering.
