For the longitudinal car and SUV applications (Groups 1 and 2), used units are widely available from strong donor parc, offering good value. For the Sprinter van applications (Group 3), reconditioned units are more commonly selected given commercial vehicle duty cycles and higher replacement cost sensitivity. Used units are a cost-effective choice for car and SUV applications where the donor vehicle's duty cycle is typically less demanding. Reconditioned units undergo full strip-down, inspection, and rebuild with new timing components and valve stem seals — recommended for commercial vehicles where reliability is critical. The OM612 and OM647 2.7 CDI five-cylinder diesels are well-regarded for durability but, as they age out of original vehicles, replacement demand is driven by injector sealing wear and timing chain tensioner degradation at higher mileages.
