For the flagship S63 and particularly the G63 AMG applications, reconditioned units are heavily favoured given the extreme vehicle values, the cost of engine-out labour, and the necessity of guaranteed reliability in high-stress environments. The M157 5.5-litre V8 Biturbo is a hand-built AMG powerplant designed for extreme performance. As these high-output vehicles accumulate mileage, replacement demand is driven by high-stress internal wear, timing chain stretch (the chain assembly is located at the gearbox end of the engine, making in-vehicle repair highly labour-intensive), and turbocharger degradation under sustained boost pressures. A prepared M157 unit addresses these wear points as standard, providing a complete replacement without the cost and downtime of an in-situ rebuild.

A:The M157 is fitted to the Mercedes-AMG 63-badge range from 2011 to 2018: E-Class W212 (E63), CLS C218 (CLS63), S-Class W222 (S63), ML/GLE W166 (ML63/GLE63), GL/GLS X166 (GL63), and G-Class W463 (G63). All applications are longitudinal. This engine is not fitted to any non-AMG vehicle or any other brand.

It replaced the naturally aspirated M156 (6.2L) and was subsequently replaced by the M177 (4.0L V8 Biturbo). The AMG Performance Package offered 585 PS over the standard 525 PS output.
