Used or Reconditioned — Which A8 Engine to Buy?

Used A8 engines

For the 3.0 TDI V6 (the A8's highest-volume engine), reconditioned units are the recommended choice given the engine's known timing chain and injector wear patterns in high-mileage examples. For the EA837 3.0 TFSI, used units with verified service history are viable given the engine's generally strong reliability record, but reconditioned is preferred for the supercharger-equipped variants. For the 4.0 TFSI V8 (S8), reconditioned is strongly recommended due to the engine's complexity and high replacement cost. A used engine can be a cost‑effective choice for older, lower‑value cars, but it carries the risk of inheriting issues from the previous vehicle.

Reconditioned A8 engines

For the 3.0 TDI V6 (the A8's highest-volume engine), reconditioned units are the recommended choice given the engine's known timing chain and injector wear patterns in high-mileage examples. For the EA837 3.0 TFSI, used units with verified service history are viable given the engine's generally strong reliability record, but reconditioned is preferred for the supercharger-equipped variants. For the 4.0 TFSI V8 (S8), reconditioned is strongly recommended due to the engine's complexity and high replacement cost. A professionally rebuilt engine gives you a fresh start with known‑good internal components and a full warranty, making it the safer long‑term investment for high‑value A8s and S8 models.

A8 Engines Through the Generations

A8

A8 2000-present

The late D2 (2000‑2002) carried over Audi's pre‑millennium V6/V8 petrol architecture (30‑valve V6, 40‑valve V8) alongside the first W12 application in a production Audi. Diesel options were the 2.5 V6 TDI and the rare 3.3 V8 TDI — both low‑volume in the UK and largely irrelevant to current replacement demand. The D3 (2002‑2009) introduced FSI direct injection across the petrol range (2.8, 3.2, 4.2) and the 3.0 TDI V6 that would become the A8's volume diesel for two decades. The S8 D3 used the Lamborghini‑derived 5.2 V10 FSI, while the 4.2 TDI V8 offered the highest torque output of any A8 diesel at that point. The D4 (2010‑2017) consolidated around the EA837 3.0 TFSI supercharged V6 and the 3.0 TDI V6 as core powertrains, with the S8 adopting the 4.0 TFSI twin‑turbo V8 from 2012. The W12 continued in 6.3‑litre form but was extremely low‑volume in the UK, and the 4.2 FSI and 4.2 TDI were dropped mid‑cycle. The current D5 (2017‑present) introduced 48V mild‑hybrid technology across the 50 TDI and 55 TFSI, and the 60 TFSI e PHEV paired the 3.0 TFSI with an electric motor. The S8 returned with a 571 PS version of the 4.0 TFSI V8, and all current A8 engines are electrified in some form.

A8 Engine Buying FAQs

A

The Audi A8 has used four core engine families since 2000: the EA837 3.0 TFSI V6 (petrol, D4–D5), the 3.0 TDI V6 (diesel, D3–D5), the 4.0 TFSI V8 (S8, D4–D5), and the 4.2 FSI V8 (petrol, D3–D4). Conditional/low‑volume families include the W12, 4.2 TDI V8, and 5.2 V10 (S8 D3). Check the generation and variant tables above for the exact engine fitted to your car.

A

Use the vehicle registration checker to confirm the model year and badge, then check the V5C logbook's "engine code" field (Section 4, field P.5). Common A8 codes include CGWD/CREA (3.0 TFSI), CDTC/CTBA/DDVC (3.0 TDI), CEUA/CTGA/CWGA (4.0 TFSI S8), and BVJ/CDRA (4.2 FSI). Always confirm the engine code matches your generation before ordering.

All GMC engines are sold at a fixed price for direct purchase. Reconditioned units carry a warranty covering the engine assembly; used units are sold with a stated condition grade. Delivery is UK‑wide. Check the individual listing for the specific warranty terms and delivery timeframe applicable to your chosen engine.
